Tenovus Cancer Care is Wales’ leading cancer charity and for over 10 years, I have been a coach to the CEO and strategy consultant working with the Board and SLT. Initially I lead an organisational strategy process which created a radical shift in the services provided by the charity to people with cancer and their families. Through a comprehensive stakeholder engagement and desk research exercise, we discovered that a key issue for cancer patients in Wales was the long journey times for chemotherapy, as many were travelling to a small number of cities for treatment. We created a new service strategy investing in building mobile units and partnering with the NHS to deliver chemotherapy in different locations around Wales. This has saved patients hours and hundreds of pounds in travelling for their chemo. My role was to build on our research findings to encourage the SLT to think differently, looking for innovation and creativity – and be brave in closing some long standing services.
My relationship with the charity is ongoing, working with the CEO, Board and Senior Leadership Team on strategy development to encourage innovation and creative thinking to monitor, review and update service provision in a cost-effective way to increase the impact on patients and their families.
